Model Description
Page for Avalanche Tailgate Protection |
The photo to the right shows a close up shot of the tailgate handle bezel on a 2002-2006 Chevy Avalanche. The bezel design is the same on Cadillac EXT SUTs.
On this handle, the thief puts a screwdriver under the handle, just to the left of the lock cylinder. It's fast, easy and quiet, making this a favorite among thieves. >
Another popular method is to use a screwdriver and punch the lock straight into the gate cavity. This is commonly known as punching the lock.
Once they can open the tailgate, it is easy to steal your expensive bed cover panels. It happens all the time!
What's the solution?

The trouble spot is below the handle, behind the bezel by the lock cylinder. |
Handle with bezel removed, plate will cover this area.

Backside of the bezel, with the lock still in place.

< The top photo to the left shows your tailgate, with the bezel removed. Without a Jimmi' Jammer™ plate installed, the thief can get right to the lock components. (That black metal piece that looks like a C is part of it.)
Without describing how it's done, suffice it to say that without the plate guarding the components, it is easy to manipulate the lock. See also the next photo.
< The bottom photo to the left shows the backside of the handle bezel with the lock still in place. The bent metal piece is the lock pawl, and is the most vulnerable part. Also notice that the lock is held in the handle with just plastic surrounding it. That is another piece that makes this assembly vulnerable to a thief. When they smash the lock in, the plastic breaks when the lock retaining clip is forced inward.
With the Jimmi' Jammer™ plate installed, the lock holder plastic is butted up to the plate, relieving the plastic from the impact. |
The photo to the right is a closeup of the backside of the bezel, with the Jimmi' Jammer™ plate installed. Notice that the lock pawl is blocked off from the outside so it cannot be manipulated to unlock the gate. (This photo is from our installation tutorial, that is why the clip is removed.)
What about other doors on my Avalanche or EXT?
They are vulnerable too. See our model chart to check out the Jimmi' Jammer for your other doors.
What about the rear passenger doors? They don't have a lock cylinder.
These doors also need the plates due to other lock rods inside the doors. We have a specific model for the rear doors on full size GM trucks and SUVs.
What about my 2007 or newer Avalanche or EXT?
These vehicles don't have the lock on the bezel anymore. At this time, we havn't heard of any break-ins through the gate on the 07+ models. We do have Jimmi' Jammer™ kits for your front doors though. See our model chart. |
